The Highly Anticipated Wonderdogs Book: Underdogs to Wonderdogs Book Review

On November 12, 2008, Fresno State's Baseball team went to Washington DC to meet President Bush on the South lawn of the White House. This is the same team that was nominated for Sports Illustrated's Sportsmen of the Year honor. Indeed, the bulldogs went from underdogs to being the wonderdogs or top dogs. Now there is a book about the experience and struggles.

Titled, "Underdogs to Wonderdogs," and written by Paul Loeffler, the 166-page book tells about the biggest story in Fresno State history. It is one of the most incredible underdog stories of all time. Indeed, Fresno State had dropped 12 of its first 20 games. It lost its best pitcher just before the postseason and needed to win the Western Athletic Conference tournament to get into the NCAA Tournament. Besides, the Bulldogs were the lowest-seeded team to win a national college title.

While rubbing shoulders with the president, the Bulldogs gave Mr. Bush, a baseball fan, some season's mementos such as an autographed baseball, a Bulldogs baseball cap and a jersey with the No. 1 and Bush's name on the back. And that was not the first trip the team had been on. Since they won the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., in June. So far, we can count the many honors the team received. The Bulldogs received an invitation to the state capitol and the ESPY Awards. The cities of Fresno and Clovis, CA also honored the baseball team. They are the world champs.

"Underdogs to Wonderdogs" details the Bulldogs' struggles from their season-opening loss to the UC-Davis to the dogpile celebration at Rosenblatt Stadium after defeating Georgia in the championship. Order the book at www.wonderdogsbook.com. It costs $34.95 or $29.95. Get your copy today by calling 559-233-6633. It is a great gift idea.

Oprah Book Reviews Next Pick: The Audacity of Hope and Dreams from my Father

Hot books you want to buy and read:

Buy the Audacity of Hope Poetry, "Young Man, Go West...." at http://poetrybusiness.blogspot.com

The Audacity of Hope book Review:

"In The Audacity of Hope, President Obama called for a different brand of politics–a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the “endless clash of armies” we see in congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of “our improbable experiment in democracy.” He explores those forces–from the fear of losing to the perpetual need to raise money to the power of the media–that can stifle even thebest-intentioned politician. He also writes, with surprising intimacy and self-deprecating humor, about settling in as a senator, seeking to balance the demands of public service and family life, and his own deepening religious commitment.

At the heart of this book is President Obama’s vision of how we can move beyond our divisions to tackle concrete problems. He examines the growing economic insecurity of American families, the racial and religious tensions within the body politic, and the transnational threats–from terrorism to pandemic–that gather beyond our shores. And he grapples with the role that faith plays in a democracy–where it is vital and where it must never intrude. Underlying his stories about family, friends, members of the Senate, even the president, is a vigorous search for connection: the foundation for a radically hopeful political consensus."

Oprah Winfrey Cries: A Sonnet for Change

A Song for Change

Complete Euphoria all over the world!

I am in tears and so are my friends and the rest of the country

Cries of joy indeed!

The tough among us have been softened by a new set of realities

The World rejoices and cries over the first Black President of the United States

It is not a victory about one man, it is a victory for the people and the world

It is a victory brought by hope and change

A catharsis, a great symbolism that has washed away the sins of our founders

JFK's prophecies have come to pass: In 40 years or so, an African-American will be

President of the United States of America. Hard to Swallow but true

Anything is possible in the United States, indeed! Hope is reborn

The promise of this country remains intact: Through hard work, discipline and organization

One can achieve most of his/her dreams

What a collective moment for us, Americans, and the world!

More than the Superbowl, more than the Olympics, more than the Pope,

And more than any war or other calamity could have done, a victory by Obama

Created a transformative moment for us all

The world symphony takes center stage: A new maestro is about to enter

The Inhabitants of our planet are eager to witness the new direction we take

Sonnet for the Audacity of Hope

Sonnet for the Aftermath of Change

Symphony for the collaborative effort and renewal of spirits

The past appears to be buried with this landslide victory. The stings of racism, Jim Crow, Discrimination

And other social, political inequities must take back seat to the hope and promises,

And possibilities offered by this great country of ours

``A hundred years ago, he would have been a slave. A hundred years on, he is the president. That's massive,''

``A new broom sweeps clean. The new president may introduce concrete measures to fix the financial crisis. Once things improve in the U.S., the world improves and China improves.''

"Obama's victory marks ``a historic change which shows that the United States is an entirely exceptional power, completing a fundamental social revolution in the space of two, three generations.''

``A new face offers Europe a new chance to remarry America.''

The New York Times Presents Personal Historians Who Help Turn Your Family and Life Histories into Books, CDs and Audio Tapes

Your life's stories and family histories can be preserved for generations to come and enjoy. Personal historians bring life back to the family's tales. They can work their magic by turning your most mundane histories into perfectly bound books, CDs and Audios.

The New York Times writer Patricia R. Olsen wrote about this emerging career named personal historian. "The job of gathering personal histories tends to attract people like social workers, journalists and others involved in communications, said Sarah White, regions director for the Association of Personal Historians, a trade association. It can be a good fit for retirees who want to embark on a second career, she said."

She gave examples of how the personal historians go about their business. They have to sharpen their interviewing skills. They have to collect the histories. Depending on the number of clients they have, the personal historians may make a good living. "Personal historians usually need some kind of training in interviewing techniques, in desktop publishing or graphic design, or in the operation of recording equipment, Ms. White said. Knowledge of geriatrics can also help. Historians may produce books themselves by using a desktop program and then having a printer make copies."

It seems that there is a large market out there for baby boomers' personal historians. They want to tell their histories. "There’s an unmet need among baby boomers who don’t know to record the stories of their parents and grandparents,” he said."

"One Nation Under Debt": Understand the U.S. Debt; What We Owe to The Japanese, Chinese...and others

The national debt is like a fat guy in a small boat," said Robert E. Wright, an economics professor at New York University and author of "One Nation Under Debt: Hamilton, Jefferson and the History of What We Owe." "The more debt you load on, the closer to the water line you get. Pretty soon, it takes only a small wave to sink you."

Our kids and grandkids will be on the hook for trillions of dollars in debt that we owe the Japanese, the Chinese and a number of less savory lenders.

To put some perspective on how out of control our borrowing has become, it took the country about 200 years to run up its first trillion dollars in debt. Then President Ronald Reagan took office in 1981 and the national debt started to soar, quadrupling to $4 trillion by the time the first President Bush exited the White House.
