"Decoded" is Jay-Z's New Book: A Mixture of Memoir, Music History and Social Commentary
Jay-Z is not trading on his name. He is trading on the substance of his work. That is what the multimillionaire music impressario wants you to know about him. He wants you to know him by his body of works. That is the way it should be. Keep in mind that this 40-year business phenom has made all the right moves when he makes some of the most brilliant music or business deals.
What do we know about this man? We know he has friends in higher places. He has the ears of Warren Buffet and Microsoft's Bill Gates who is willing to spend beaucoup money pitching his new book, "Decoded." However, the Brooklyn-born performer was not always rolling in dough. His beginnings were humble but he quickly realized that he could leave the Brooklyn housing project and do better for himself and some of his friends. He had to make choices. As he writes in his 336-page book which is partly a remake of his song lyrics. "No lie, just know I chose my own fate / I drove by the fork in the road and went traight..." In "Renegade," he writes, "I went startight - stopped selling drugs - but I also didn't accept the false choice between poverty and breaking the law."
With $450 million to his war chest, Jay-Z has been featured in Forbes Magazine's 400 "Richest People in America." He has been no 1 on the billboard so many times. He has won 10 Grammy awards and sold millions of albums. Jay-Z has some great business ventures such as the New Jersey Nets, 40/40 club, a sports bar-chain, a Greenwich village bistro named the Spotted Pig, creative and operational control of Rocawear clothing line etc.

Little Bits of Love Art Game Created by Avid Fan of the Twilight Saga Series
Fans of the Twilight Saga series are involved in a very serious game which they hope will be spread all over the nation and the world. Inspired by the series and their love of art that can help heal and inspire others, fans are looking for Bella and Jacob's love art notes in places that nobody would think about. Once a lucky finder is able to find one, he/she reports their findings to Little Bits of Love Art by sharing the impact of this love note finding on their own lives and on their friends. In turn, they may go ahead and strategically place it somewhere else so the journey of searching, finding, discovering and healing can have its own life story.

Kitty Kelley's New Book, 'Oprah: A Biography' Shows Closet Skeleton, Paints Sordid Episodes in Oprah's Recent Past: Once in Love with John Tesh...etc
Oprah does not kiss and tell. Who does not like this kind of privacy in a woman? She is a classy lady for that! She never revealed this kind of info before. She never revealed that she had a relationship with John Tesh....
Does Oprah's aunt reveal to Kitty Kelley the identity of her father? For this reason only, Oprah should have talked to her. Maybe she is not interested in finding her birth father. 
Promoting her new book will not be easy for Kitty Kelley as Oprah's friends in the media are closing doors on her nose. So far, Kitty Kelley is complaining about her unsuccessful efforts to market this unauthorized biography of one of the most powerful and richest women in the world. Well, Oprah did not want to talk to her for this new biography. Kitty was determined to reveal the sleeping skeleton that she thought she could find in her closet. Thus far, a lot of people have been talking about Oprah's past flame, her cub co-reporter, John Tesh, who is also very popular in the talk show world.
OK, what does the book reveal that most of us did not know about Oprah? We all know that Oprah likes controlling her image and the products she delivers. Her employees have to sign a non-disclosure clause. Well, it kind of makes sense considering that her show has been number one for a lot of years.
Here is what the book is causing people, readers to talk about or discuss:
On CBS News, we can read the following, "n unauthorized biography, "Oprah: A Biography," which will be released on Tuesday, Kelley paints a picture of some sordid episodes in Winfrey's past...."
"....Winfrey has already revealed that she was sexual molested and pregnant by the time she was 14 and that the newborn died in birth. Kelly reportedly says there's more to the story. "This book goes into much more detail. This book names the little boy that she gave birth to, presents the birth certificate and tries to show how these secrets, these awful secrets, controlled Oprah for most of her life," Kelley told the The New York Times. In her book, Kelley also details Winfrey's 1970s romance with former "Entertainment Tonight" and radio talk show host, John Tesh. ..."
The book reveals this much. John Tesh bolted out of the home they shared together in the middle of the night. This is an interesting observation considering that they were living in Tennessee, the big South in those days. Who knows why he ran out of their home like this? Oprah was young and full of life at the time!
In the New York Times's first question to Kitty Kelley, Deborah Solomon presents Oprah as a manipulator, "The book presents her as a cold manipulator who requires everyone around her to sign confidentiality agreements. ..."
Kitty Kelley responds that Oprah is very secretive even when she knows that there are so many secrets out there.
Kitty Kelley wants to make us understand that her book goes into much detail about Oprah's life even though the queen of talk show has already revealed some of her hard life's stories.
Kitty Kelley's interview about her book reveals that Oprah's mother, Vernita Lee, lives a very comfortable life, chauffer-driven everywhere in Milwaukee. However, the mother does not have her phone number and can not contact here directly. Well, there may be many reasons for that omission.
Kitty reveals that Oprah is very restrictive or even more restrictive than Frank Sinatra and Nancy Reagan. Here is how some media moguls do not want in Oprah's croos hair. "we have already been told by Barbara Walters’s producer, No, you cannot be on “The View,” I cannot disrupt my relationship with Oprah. Joy Behar, the same thing. Charlie Rose; Larry King said, I will not do it, it might upset Oprah. Even David Letterman."
Oprah is still connected with Stedman Graham. Her best friend is Gayle King
Other revelations of the book are, (according to Eonline.com):
The book isn't going to do anything to stop those gay rumors. "I know people are expecting me to 'out' her," Kelley told USA Today. "But I think she's just asexual. She's poured all of her energies into her career. And if she is, she is never ever, ever going to come out. So relax, people." Of course, that didn't stop her from liberally quoting Rosie O'Donnell on the Howard Stern Show last year musing that Oprah and BFF Gayle King are "the emotional equivalent of a gay couple," or author Erica Jong's remark that she "would not be surprised if Oprah is gay."
• She has a secret birth father. Kelley has described Winfrey's life as being "choked with secrets," the biggest one of which is her not knowing who her birth father is. Kelley spent three days in Mississippi with Winfrey's aunt, Katharine Esters, who told Kelley the identity of Winfrey's real father but swore the author to secrecy. Kelley did not divulge the information in the book, because she said Winfrey's mother has yet to share that information with her famous daughter. (Of course, as Esters is still holding a grudge against Winfrey for failing to promote her own memoir and harbors long-held "disagreements over the family's history," she may not be the most unbiased source out there.)
• Oprah might want to have her lawyers take another look at those confidentiality agreements. Kelley interviewed roughly 850 sources for the book, most of whom are "present or former employees," whom Kelley said had to remain anonymous "because they signed binding confidentiality agreements." Well, clearly not that binding. She also managed to score an interview with Oprah's father, Vernon Winfrey, who let rip the following sound bite-ready quotes: "I need her show like a hog needs a holiday." And! "She may be admired by the world, but I know the truth. So does God and so does Oprah. Two of us remain ashamed." With fathers like that, who needs alleged birth parents?

Virginia Tech Professor of History A. Roger Ekirch did a good job telling this moving story. He used his research conducted in Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States, especially Delaware where Annesley or "Jemmy" served as an indentured servant.
Born in Dublin in 1715, Annesley, or 'Jemmy', was the presumptive heir of five aristocratic titles. At the age of eight he was turned out of house and home by his bullying father, Baron Altham, probably at the instigation of the latter's mistress. Though he managed to keep in touch with his family after a fashion, he had little option but to look for work running errands or as a shoeboy, sleeping in doorways or beneath market stalls in the streets, until he was taken in by a kindly butcher and his family. His 'uncle Dick' eventually traced him and kept a distant but unsympathetic eye on him. When the lad heard about his father's funeral in 1727 he made his way to the ceremony and attended, though only as a spectator, and reviled by his uncle as nothing better than an impostor and a vagabond.
Five months later the same uncle had the moment he had been waiting for. He saw the boy visiting a market, had him abducted by accomplices, and sent by ship to the United States as an indentured servant in Delaware. As heir to one of the greatest family fortunes in Ireland, Richard Annesley had every reason for wanting him out of the way, so he could seize his nephew's lands and inheritance.
After thirteen years of virtual slavery he escaped, returned home and took steps to reclaim what was rightfully his. His uncle had already become (or one might say made himself) Earl of Anglesea, and the stage was set for a lengthy battle through the courts. The impostor Earl had a few more dirty tricks in his armoury, and the plaintiff was involved in at least one accident which may have been a deliberate murder attempt. It was also asserted that he was illegitimate, the son of a wet-nurse employed by the family.

Chicago is using all its guns in the fight to get the 2016 olympic games. Besides sending letters to the Olympic committee, the President is ready to visit Denmark to give his pitch for the games to take place in Chicago. The competition is becoming very tough with Japan sending its king. Brasil's president will be there. Spain's king will also be there to fight to get the games. It makes sense that President Obama and his wife accompany the American delegation. Even Oprah Winfrey, a favorite daughter of Chicago, will be part of the delegation to Copenhagen.
The International Olympic Committee is meeting in Copenhagen to select a host city for the 2016 Summer Games. Chicago faces tough competition from Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo. The president promised, a "spectacular Olympic experience for one and all."
"President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama symbolize the hope, opportunity and inspiration that makes Chicago great, and we are honored to have two of our city's most accomplished residents leading our delegation in Copenhagen," Mayor Richard M. Daley said in a statement. "Who better to share with members of the International Olympic Committee the commitment and enthusiasm Chicago has for the Olympic and Paralympic Movement than the President and First Lady."
Michael Johnson and Jackie Joyner-Kersee will also be part of the delegation.
Let us hope the IOC accepts the Chicago's bid!

The Surrogates Author, Robert Venditti, is the King of Alternate Reality in Graphic, Comic Novels
Who is interested in studying people addicted to the Internet and alternate reality?
First we must agree on the definition of alternate reality.
Alternate Reality: It has to do with anything or a technology that allows people to fulfill that basic human need to be someone other than him/herself. What would that world be like?
Telling Stories with pictures is the realm of Graphic Novels;
Titles of some major comic books: Surrogates, Author Robert Venditti, Sin City, Watchman, Astro City: The Confessor.
Venditti wrote the comic book series "The Surrogates," a grimmy commentary on our times, a prequel was just released after the success of The Surrogates (Flesh & Bone). Another one is "The Homeland Directive" that is in the works.
Venditti's Borders-to-Hollywood story via comic book company, Top Shelf Productions, should be an inspiration to anyone hoping to break into comics. He worked his way up.

Review of "Gambling: Mapping the American Moral Landscape" submitted by Reader
In recent decades, legalized gambling has spread like wildfire in the United States, while at the same time other historical vices continue to face strong opposition. Gambling's success has received little academic attention, but a recent book seeks to correct that.
Alan Wolfe, a professor of political science at Boston College, and Erik C. Owens edited the recently published book, "Gambling: Mapping the American Moral Landscape," (Baylor University Press).
As they note in the book's introduction the amount of money involved in the industry is considerable. In 2005 an estimated $84.65 billion was wagered, and in 2006 around one in four Americans visited a casino -- a radical change from not too many years ago when Nevada was the only place with legalized gambling, the editors observed. In fact, gambling is now legal in one form or another in 48 states, plus the District of Columbia.
Amid campaigns to stop smoking and reduce alcohol consumption, and little tolerance for sexual misconduct by public figures, there is relatively little opposition to gambling, they note. Wolfe deals with this curious phenomenon in his chapter of the book, titled "The Culture War Issue That Never Was."
A century ago there was strong opposition to gambling by churches, and evangelical leaders were fierce in their criticism of what they denounced as a vice. Wolfe explained that this religious opposition to gambling was a byproduct of the Puritan strain in American culture.
This Puritanism let to the campaign against alcohol that resulted in the Prohibition era. By contrast, Wolfe observed that religious-led opposition to gambling was never elevated to a nationally-coordinated campaign. In addition, a number of political activists associated with Christian groups have endorsed gambling and lobbied in favor of it.
Wolfe also argued that in general Protestant leaders are political pragmatists and are unwilling to criticize practices popular among their members.
No common cause
He also pointed out that while Christians and some feminists have made common cause against pornography, no such alliance has been formed regarding gambling. This is in spite of the fact that some feminists are critical of gambling, given the impact on mothers and families when the husband gambles a large portion of the family income.
In his contribution, John Dombrink, a professor in the department of criminology, law and society at the University of California, commented that many states have chosen to resolve fiscal problems through gambling revenue. This was the argument used by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick in 2007 when he announced a plan to allow more casinos.
This can lead to a conflict of interests, Dombrink added. We can expect gambling operators to want to maximize profit, but what does this lead to when it is the same state government that both regulates gambling and profits from it?
Dombrink also explained that, if opposition to gambling by social conservatives has been muted, so called "progressives" have also shied away from attacking the spread of legal gambling.
The lack of opposition has led to a cosy relationship between gambling operators and government, observed R. Shep Melnick. A professor of American politics at Boston College, Melnick noted that gambling companies have spent millions in lobbying politicians and that, in some cases, have even helped draft the legislation governing the industry.
He cited one study that put at more than $100 million the amount the gambling industry spent on lobbying and campaign contributions in the period 1994-96.
The state governments, in turn, have a vested interest in the success of gambling. State lotteries spend around half a billion dollars annually in advertising, according to Melnick. Thus, as they have cracked down on tobacco advertising they have stepped up efforts to spread gambling. The Federal Trade Commission has even gone so far as to exempt state lotteries from truth-in-advertising rules, Melnick added.
"Many of the ordinary rules of the game are suspended in lottery politics," he commented.
At the same time he explained that the general public shares in the blame. People call for more government services, but resist any attempt to increase taxes. Lotteries and casinos offer governments the solution to these conflicting demands.
"A tax that people line up to pay, a tax that falls on poor people who tend not to vote anyway -- how many hard-pressed politicians could resist that?" he observed.
The question of the impact on the poor was detailed by Melnick. Those earning less than $10,000 a year spend an average of $600 on lottery tickets, while those earning more than $50,000 spend less than $250.
High school dropouts spend four times as much as college graduates on lottery tickets and blacks spend five times as much as whites.
It's questionable, Melnick argued, that the revenues gained through gambling trickle down far enough to compensate for the effects of what is, in effect, a regressive tax on the poor.
Harm caused
John P. Hoffmann, a professor of sociology at Brigham Young University, examined the harm caused by gambling. Gambling has generally been placed in the category of victimless crimes, but he argued this terminology is not correct.
Problems such as gambling have substantial negative effects on marital relations and family functioning. Many people gamble with no apparent problems, Hoffmann admitted, but studies point to about 9% of gamblers having some risks, with another 1.5% classified as problem gamblers, and 0.9% as pathological gamblers.
The percentages might seem low, but they translate into substantial numbers -- millions of people, in fact -- when you consider the total population of the United States, he commented.
When it comes to family life Hoffmann observed that pathological gambling is associated with mental health problems and divorce. When gambling reaches problem levels, children are also often acutely affected. Not only does it influence the time parents spend at home, but children also suffer from a sense of diminished personal attachment to their parents and a loss of trust in them.
Moral dimension
In itself, gambling is not immoral according to the teaching of the Catholic Church, and the use of lotteries or bingo nights has been a common feature in fundraising at the parish and local levels of the Church.
As No. 2413 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church points out, however, games of chance "become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and the needs of others."
"The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement," it also warns.
How then can we resist this enslavement and avoid the evils caused by excessive gambling? Perhaps the answer lies in a rediscovery of a life oriented by virtue.

This was the argument used by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick in 2007 when he announced a plan to allow more casinos.
This can lead to a conflict of interests, Dombrink added. We can expect gambling operators to want to maximize profit, but what does this lead to when it is the same state government that both regulates gambling and profits from it?
Dombrink also explained that, if opposition to gambling by social conservatives has been muted, so called "progressives" have also shied away from attacking the spread of legal gambling.
The lack of opposition has led to a cosy relationship between gambling operators and government, observed R. Shep Melnick. A professor of American politics at Boston College, Melnick noted that gambling companies have spent millions in lobbying politicians and that, in some cases, have even helped draft the legislation governing the industry.
He cited one study that put at more than $100 million the amount the gambling industry spent on lobbying and campaign contributions in the period 1994-96.
The state governments, in turn, have a vested interest in the success of gambling. State lotteries spend around half a billion dollars annually in advertising, according to Melnick. Thus, as they have cracked down on tobacco advertising they have stepped up efforts to spread gambling. The Federal Trade Commission has even gone so far as to exempt state lotteries from truth-in-advertising rules, Melnick added.
"Many of the ordinary rules of the game are suspended in lottery politics," he commented.
At the same time he explained that the general public shares in the blame. People call for more government services, but resist any attempt to increase taxes. Lotteries and casinos offer governments the solution to these conflicting demands.
"A tax that people line up to pay, a tax that falls on poor people who tend not to vote anyway -- how many hard-pressed politicians could resist that?" he observed.
The question of the impact on the poor was detailed by Melnick. Those earning less than $10,000 a year spend an average of $600 on lottery tickets, while those earning more than $50,000 spend less than $250.
High school dropouts spend four times as much as college graduates on lottery tickets and blacks spend five times as much as whites.
It's questionable, Melnick argued, that the revenues gained through gambling trickle down far enough to compensate for the effects of what is, in effect, a regressive tax on the poor.
Harm caused
John P. Hoffmann, a professor of sociology at Brigham Young University, examined the harm caused by gambling. Gambling has generally been placed in the category of victimless crimes, but he argued this terminology is not correct.
Problems such as gambling have substantial negative effects on marital relations and family functioning. Many people gamble with no apparent problems, Hoffmann admitted, but studies point to about 9% of gamblers having some risks, with another 1.5% classified as problem gamblers, and 0.9% as pathological gamblers.
The percentages might seem low, but they translate into substantial numbers -- millions of people, in fact -- when you consider the total population of the United States, he commented.
When it comes to family life Hoffmann observed that pathological gambling is associated with mental health problems and divorce. When gambling reaches problem levels, children are also often acutely affected. Not only does it influence the time parents spend at home, but children also suffer from a sense of diminished personal attachment to their parents and a loss of trust in them.
Moral dimension
In itself, gambling is not immoral according to the teaching of the Catholic Church, and the use of lotteries or bingo nights has been a common feature in fundraising at the parish and local levels of the Church.
As No. 2413 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church points out, however, games of chance "become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and the needs of others."
"The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement," it also warns.
How then can we resist this enslavement and avoid the evils caused by excessive gambling? Perhaps the answer lies in a rediscovery of a life oriented by virtue.

New Book: A Black Girl's Guide To Interracial Dating
I have been reading about interracial dating and relationships lately. I have been reading about inter-ethnic relationships too, what makes them work, and about the initial reasons why people from all races and ethnic groups are attracted to others.
"Black Girl's Guide to Interracial Dating" reminds me of this book, "Why Black Men Love White Women: Going Beyond Sexual Politics to the Heart of the Matter (Paperback)"
It also reminds me of another book by Randall Kennedy,"Interracial Intimacies: Sex, Marriage, Identity, and Adoption (Paperback). He said it very well, ""Slavery constituted the principal backdrop against which whites and blacks encountered one another for over two hundred years, from the 1660s to the 1860s..."
Whether we are talking about Blacks getting interested in white women or White women being interested in Blacks, the backdrop is the slavery that is at the root of the relationship.
Many of these books offer more information than others. Those that delve into history, sociology, politics, law and other disciplines to explain the attraction provide more background info.
Here we are not talking about Black/White relationship only. There are all kinds of interracial relationships out there. Chinese/Koreans/Japanese/American/French/Hmong/British/German relationships exist. The list can go on. What do you think about interracial relationships these days?
People are attracted to each other. They want to know the other person. After all, a man is looking for a woman and a woman, a man from any racial and ethnic groups.

"Top Secret: Sexual Guidance for Married Couples" Book by Muslim and Emirati Ms. Lootah Uses Koran, Teaches Muslim Women about SEX
This is a book that Oprah will undoubtedly showcase on her show. She will probably recommend it to many of her readers. To say that it is written by a liberated Muslim woman does not diminish anything from its impact on women in the Middle East and the US. The premises are that Ms. Lootah wants to help muslim women get comfortable talking about and enjoying sex. Well, she is on a mission to change things for women in her country and elsewhere. She is not shy to talk or write about finding and experiencing orgasm. This book has been rocking the Muslim world these days. And she did all of that with specific quotes from the Koran! Now, do you think that most Muslim men would appreciate and encourage her work?
No. Not all of them want to hear about that. Some of them even go as far as threatening to kill her. Many of these guys may be hypocrite. In the book, the author warns against or confronts homosexuality because many men use other men for their sexual experience and expect to continue to receive the same acts from their spouse when they get married. No wonder Ms. Lootah has to counsel them when they are faced with divorce. According to Dubai's laws, couples contemplating divorce must first get some counseling to solve their marital issues. Ms. Lootah did not write the book for herself. "In Saudi Arabia and other countries where the genders are rigorously separated, many men have their first sexual experiences with other men, which affects their attitudes toward sex in marriage, Ms. Lootah said.
“Many men who had anal sex with men before marriage want the same thing with their wives, because they don’t know anything else,” Ms. Lootah said. “This is one reason we need sex education in our schools.”
She wrote for women who are not even sure whether they could kiss their partner all over their body. Now they have a book they can turn to. She gave the example of an older woman whose world was rocked when she discovered orgasm. She spent all of these years to procreate. She is now a grandmother who had never experienced sexual satisfaction with her husband. Ms. Lootah gave many other examples in the book.
Ms. Lootah is not some type of sexual activist. She is a marital counselor in Dubai's main courthouse. In her job, she has seen many couples battling intimacy issues. She realized that a lot of them are not educated in the matters of sex ed. Muslims should not limit their sexual pleasures. For that, she is a new evangelist in the Arab world. It is nothing new for many Muslim men who get this type of sexual favors from foreign women brought to the country because of the growing economy and oil revenues. In the age of the Internet, SMS, text message, twitter and other tech gadgets, it will be hard to keep these repressed Muslim women with a veil over their brain. Ms. Lootah wants to change the statut quo. She wants Muslim women to know about their G spot and make specific requests from their partners who may be surprised by such requests. It may be too much work for some of them.
"Top Secret: Sexual Guidance for Married Couples" should be on the table or private library of every single Muslim family. Well, they must not let the kids have access to it!
Honor killings are still prevalent in the region. Women can not have sex before being married. If they engage in such activities, they can be stoned to death or hung. Men can also die if they take the virginity of a woman whom they do not want to marry. No wonder that both sexes have to cut corners!
