As long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by freedom fighters and human rights activists. They are men and women who seek to redress the wrongs of their societies. I am talking about men such as the various African kings who fought hard to turn back the tides of slavery and occupation of their homeland, Abraham Lincoln who fought to keep the Union intact and ultimately emancipate the American slaves, Toussaint Louverture, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Alexandre Petion, Henri Christophe, Jean Francois Biassou and many others who fought to liberate St. Domingue (Santo Domingo) and create the first black republic in the world, Haiti, Martin Luther King Jr. Rosa Parks, and countless others who fought in the Civil Rights Movement. The list of those who sacrificed their lives, possessions, and families for the freedom of the People, their people and complete strangers, is very long.

Nelson Mandela follows in the footsteps of all those heroes. He knew that South Africa could treat her sons and daughters better. He also knew that there were many other men and women from all ethnic and racial backgrounds who were feeling oppressed by the nationalist agenda. If the majority was not free, the minority was not either. Finding time and devising ways to redress the wrongs and indignities directed to the dark-skinned members of the society would have to take place over time. Little did he then know that the personal cost of his commitment would be very high and arduous!

Nelson Mandela knew that he had to give up everything to launch himself into the Freedom Struggle. He figuratively became a sacrificial lamb for the cause. Many others stopped bullets with their own skin and body only to depart the struggle at a very young and promising age. The non-violent revolution was not fought without bloodshed orchestrated by the apartheid regime. Wrongful accusations and imprisonments were common. And Nelson Mandela and many of his comrades would spend more than 27 years in prison. Many South Africans and sympathizers all over the world were also suffering along with the convicted ANC members. After all, if one was in jail, all were in jail. With hammers, they crushed stones. They were sent to the lime quarry. Their determination to the cause could not be crushed despite the forced labor they endured. Despite the situation, they managed to study and educate themselves at the Robben Island University (the prison).

In this booklet, you will read about the true measures and characters of men and women who survived the most brutal attacks against their persona but who coped and ended up surviving only to finally triumph. The oppressed and the oppressor alike are robbed of their humanity. The warders as well as the prisoners were not free. So many times, the warders had to defer to Nelson Mandela and his group in many areas.

The authors write about subjects such as how to make a baby, fertility issues, natural fruits and foods that boost sexual drive and may lead to pregnancy. They also show the importance of prayers and connectedness in their quest and pregnancy adventures.

This is a great read for anybody who has ever fallen in love, gotten out of love, or is thinking about dating again or getting married some day.

You will learn things that are not taught in college, business schools and universities. The authors themselves do not rely solely on their Western or pedagogic, didactic knowledge to write this book and make their recommendations. They use the school of hard knocks too.

Oprah does not kiss and tell. Who does not like this kind of privacy in a woman? She is a classy lady for that! She never revealed this kind of info before. She never revealed that she had a relationship with John Tesh....

Does Oprah's aunt reveal to Kitty Kelley the identity of her father? For this reason only, Oprah should have talked to her. Maybe she is not interested in finding her birth father.

Promoting her new book will not be easy for Kitty Kelley as Oprah's friends in the media are closing doors on her nose. So far, Kitty Kelley is complaining about her unsuccessful efforts to market this unauthorized biography of one of the most powerful and richest women in the world. Well, Oprah did not want to talk to her for this new biography. Kitty was determined to reveal the sleeping skeleton that she thought she could find in her closet. Thus far, a lot of people have been talking about Oprah's past flame, her cub co-reporter, John Tesh, who is also very popular in the talk show world.

OK, what does the book reveal that most of us did not know about Oprah? We all know that Oprah likes controlling her image and the products she delivers. Her employees have to sign a non-disclosure clause. Well, it kind of makes sense considering that her show has been number one for a lot of years.

Here is what the book is causing people, readers to talk about or discuss:

On CBS News, we can read the following, "n unauthorized biography, "Oprah: A Biography," which will be released on Tuesday, Kelley paints a picture of some sordid episodes in Winfrey's past...."

"....Winfrey has already revealed that she was sexual molested and pregnant by the time she was 14 and that the newborn died in birth. Kelly reportedly says there's more to the story. "This book goes into much more detail. This book names the little boy that she gave birth to, presents the birth certificate and tries to show how these secrets, these awful secrets, controlled Oprah for most of her life," Kelley told the The New York Times. In her book, Kelley also details Winfrey's 1970s romance with former "Entertainment Tonight" and radio talk show host, John Tesh. ..."

The book reveals this much. John Tesh bolted out of the home they shared together in the middle of the night. This is an interesting observation considering that they were living in Tennessee, the big South in those days. Who knows why he ran out of their home like this? Oprah was young and full of life at the time!

In the New York Times's first question to Kitty Kelley, Deborah Solomon presents Oprah as a manipulator, "The book presents her as a cold manipulator who requires everyone around her to sign confidentiality agreements. ..."

Kitty Kelley responds that Oprah is very secretive even when she knows that there are so many secrets out there.

Kitty Kelley wants to make us understand that her book goes into much detail about Oprah's life even though the queen of talk show has already revealed some of her hard life's stories.

Kitty Kelley's interview about her book reveals that Oprah's mother, Vernita Lee, lives a very comfortable life, chauffer-driven everywhere in Milwaukee. However, the mother does not have her phone number and can not contact here directly. Well, there may be many reasons for that omission.

Kitty reveals that Oprah is very restrictive or even more restrictive than Frank Sinatra and Nancy Reagan. Here is how some media moguls do not want in Oprah's croos hair. "we have already been told by Barbara Walters’s producer, No, you cannot be on “The View,” I cannot disrupt my relationship with Oprah. Joy Behar, the same thing. Charlie Rose; Larry King said, I will not do it, it might upset Oprah. Even David Letterman."

Oprah is still connected with Stedman Graham. Her best friend is Gayle King

Other revelations of the book are, (according to Eonline.com):

The book isn't going to do anything to stop those gay rumors. "I know people are expecting me to 'out' her," Kelley told USA Today. "But I think she's just asexual. She's poured all of her energies into her career. And if she is, she is never ever, ever going to come out. So relax, people." Of course, that didn't stop her from liberally quoting Rosie O'Donnell on the Howard Stern Show last year musing that Oprah and BFF Gayle King are "the emotional equivalent of a gay couple," or author Erica Jong's remark that she "would not be surprised if Oprah is gay."

• She has a secret birth father. Kelley has described Winfrey's life as being "choked with secrets," the biggest one of which is her not knowing who her birth father is. Kelley spent three days in Mississippi with Winfrey's aunt, Katharine Esters, who told Kelley the identity of Winfrey's real father but swore the author to secrecy. Kelley did not divulge the information in the book, because she said Winfrey's mother has yet to share that information with her famous daughter. (Of course, as Esters is still holding a grudge against Winfrey for failing to promote her own memoir and harbors long-held "disagreements over the family's history," she may not be the most unbiased source out there.)

• Oprah might want to have her lawyers take another look at those confidentiality agreements. Kelley interviewed roughly 850 sources for the book, most of whom are "present or former employees," whom Kelley said had to remain anonymous "because they signed binding confidentiality agreements." Well, clearly not that binding. She also managed to score an interview with Oprah's father, Vernon Winfrey, who let rip the following sound bite-ready quotes: "I need her show like a hog needs a holiday." And! "She may be admired by the world, but I know the truth. So does God and so does Oprah. Two of us remain ashamed." With fathers like that, who needs alleged birth parents?

Virginia Tech Professor of History A. Roger Ekirch did a good job telling this moving story. He used his research conducted in Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States, especially Delaware where Annesley or "Jemmy" served as an indentured servant.

Born in Dublin in 1715, Annesley, or 'Jemmy', was the presumptive heir of five aristocratic titles. At the age of eight he was turned out of house and home by his bullying father, Baron Altham, probably at the instigation of the latter's mistress. Though he managed to keep in touch with his family after a fashion, he had little option but to look for work running errands or as a shoeboy, sleeping in doorways or beneath market stalls in the streets, until he was taken in by a kindly butcher and his family. His 'uncle Dick' eventually traced him and kept a distant but unsympathetic eye on him. When the lad heard about his father's funeral in 1727 he made his way to the ceremony and attended, though only as a spectator, and reviled by his uncle as nothing better than an impostor and a vagabond.

Five months later the same uncle had the moment he had been waiting for. He saw the boy visiting a market, had him abducted by accomplices, and sent by ship to the United States as an indentured servant in Delaware. As heir to one of the greatest family fortunes in Ireland, Richard Annesley had every reason for wanting him out of the way, so he could seize his nephew's lands and inheritance.

After thirteen years of virtual slavery he escaped, returned home and took steps to reclaim what was rightfully his. His uncle had already become (or one might say made himself) Earl of Anglesea, and the stage was set for a lengthy battle through the courts. The impostor Earl had a few more dirty tricks in his armoury, and the plaintiff was involved in at least one accident which may have been a deliberate murder attempt. It was also asserted that he was illegitimate, the son of a wet-nurse employed by the family.

Chicago is using all its guns in the fight to get the 2016 olympic games. Besides sending letters to the Olympic committee, the President is ready to visit Denmark to give his pitch for the games to take place in Chicago. The competition is becoming very tough with Japan sending its king. Brasil's president will be there. Spain's king will also be there to fight to get the games. It makes sense that President Obama and his wife accompany the American delegation. Even Oprah Winfrey, a favorite daughter of Chicago, will be part of the delegation to Copenhagen.

The International Olympic Committee is meeting in Copenhagen to select a host city for the 2016 Summer Games. Chicago faces tough competition from Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo. The president promised, a "spectacular Olympic experience for one and all."

"President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama symbolize the hope, opportunity and inspiration that makes Chicago great, and we are honored to have two of our city's most accomplished residents leading our delegation in Copenhagen," Mayor Richard M. Daley said in a statement. "Who better to share with members of the International Olympic Committee the commitment and enthusiasm Chicago has for the Olympic and Paralympic Movement than the President and First Lady."

Michael Johnson and Jackie Joyner-Kersee will also be part of the delegation.

Let us hope the IOC accepts the Chicago's bid!

Alternate Reality: It has to do with anything or a technology that allows people to fulfill that basic human need to be someone other than him/herself. What would that world be like?

Review of "Gambling: Mapping the American Moral Landscape" submitted by Reader

In recent decades, legalized gambling has spread like wildfire in the United States, while at the same time other historical vices continue to face strong opposition. Gambling's success has received little academic attention, but a recent book seeks to correct that.

Alan Wolfe, a professor of political science at Boston College, and Erik C. Owens edited the recently published book, "Gambling: Mapping the American Moral Landscape," (Baylor University Press).

As they note in the book's introduction the amount of money involved in the industry is considerable. In 2005 an estimated $84.65 billion was wagered, and in 2006 around one in four Americans visited a casino -- a radical change from not too many years ago when Nevada was the only place with legalized gambling, the editors observed. In fact, gambling is now legal in one form or another in 48 states, plus the District of Columbia.

Amid campaigns to stop smoking and reduce alcohol consumption, and little tolerance for sexual misconduct by public figures, there is relatively little opposition to gambling, they note. Wolfe deals with this curious phenomenon in his chapter of the book, titled "The Culture War Issue That Never Was."

A century ago there was strong opposition to gambling by churches, and evangelical leaders were fierce in their criticism of what they denounced as a vice. Wolfe explained that this religious opposition to gambling was a byproduct of the Puritan strain in American culture.

This Puritanism let to the campaign against alcohol that resulted in the Prohibition era. By contrast, Wolfe observed that religious-led opposition to gambling was never elevated to a nationally-coordinated campaign. In addition, a number of political activists associated with Christian groups have endorsed gambling and lobbied in favor of it.

Wolfe also argued that in general Protestant leaders are political pragmatists and are unwilling to criticize practices popular among their members.

No common cause

He also pointed out that while Christians and some feminists have made common cause against pornography, no such alliance has been formed regarding gambling. This is in spite of the fact that some feminists are critical of gambling, given the impact on mothers and families when the husband gambles a large portion of the family income.

In his contribution, John Dombrink, a professor in the department of criminology, law and society at the University of California, commented that many states have chosen to resolve fiscal problems through gambling revenue. This was the argument used by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick in 2007 when he announced a plan to allow more casinos.

This can lead to a conflict of interests, Dombrink added. We can expect gambling operators to want to maximize profit, but what does this lead to when it is the same state government that both regulates gambling and profits from it?

Dombrink also explained that, if opposition to gambling by social conservatives has been muted, so called "progressives" have also shied away from attacking the spread of legal gambling.

The lack of opposition has led to a cosy relationship between gambling operators and government, observed R. Shep Melnick. A professor of American politics at Boston College, Melnick noted that gambling companies have spent millions in lobbying politicians and that, in some cases, have even helped draft the legislation governing the industry.

He cited one study that put at more than $100 million the amount the gambling industry spent on lobbying and campaign contributions in the period 1994-96.

The state governments, in turn, have a vested interest in the success of gambling. State lotteries spend around half a billion dollars annually in advertising, according to Melnick. Thus, as they have cracked down on tobacco advertising they have stepped up efforts to spread gambling. The Federal Trade Commission has even gone so far as to exempt state lotteries from truth-in-advertising rules, Melnick added.

"Many of the ordinary rules of the game are suspended in lottery politics," he commented.

At the same time he explained that the general public shares in the blame. People call for more government services, but resist any attempt to increase taxes. Lotteries and casinos offer governments the solution to these conflicting demands.

"A tax that people line up to pay, a tax that falls on poor people who tend not to vote anyway -- how many hard-pressed politicians could resist that?" he observed.

The question of the impact on the poor was detailed by Melnick. Those earning less than $10,000 a year spend an average of $600 on lottery tickets, while those earning more than $50,000 spend less than $250.

High school dropouts spend four times as much as college graduates on lottery tickets and blacks spend five times as much as whites.

It's questionable, Melnick argued, that the revenues gained through gambling trickle down far enough to compensate for the effects of what is, in effect, a regressive tax on the poor.

Harm caused

John P. Hoffmann, a professor of sociology at Brigham Young University, examined the harm caused by gambling. Gambling has generally been placed in the category of victimless crimes, but he argued this terminology is not correct.

Problems such as gambling have substantial negative effects on marital relations and family functioning. Many people gamble with no apparent problems, Hoffmann admitted, but studies point to about 9% of gamblers having some risks, with another 1.5% classified as problem gamblers, and 0.9% as pathological gamblers.

The percentages might seem low, but they translate into substantial numbers -- millions of people, in fact -- when you consider the total population of the United States, he commented.

When it comes to family life Hoffmann observed that pathological gambling is associated with mental health problems and divorce. When gambling reaches problem levels, children are also often acutely affected. Not only does it influence the time parents spend at home, but children also suffer from a sense of diminished personal attachment to their parents and a loss of trust in them.

Moral dimension

In itself, gambling is not immoral according to the teaching of the Catholic Church, and the use of lotteries or bingo nights has been a common feature in fundraising at the parish and local levels of the Church.

As No. 2413 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church points out, however, games of chance "become morally unacceptable when they deprive someone of what is necessary to provide for his needs and the needs of others."

"The passion for gambling risks becoming an enslavement," it also warns.

How then can we resist this enslavement and avoid the evils caused by excessive gambling? Perhaps the answer lies in a rediscovery of a life oriented by virtue.

I have been reading about interracial dating and relationships lately. I have been reading about inter-ethnic relationships too, what makes them work, and about the initial reasons why people from all races and ethnic groups are attracted to others.

"Black Girl's Guide to Interracial Dating" reminds me of this book, "Why Black Men Love White Women: Going Beyond Sexual Politics to the Heart of the Matter (Paperback)"

It also reminds me of another book by Randall Kennedy,"Interracial Intimacies: Sex, Marriage, Identity, and Adoption (Paperback). He said it very well, ""Slavery constituted the principal backdrop against which whites and blacks encountered one another for over two hundred years, from the 1660s to the 1860s..."

Whether we are talking about Blacks getting interested in white women or White women being interested in Blacks, the backdrop is the slavery that is at the root of the relationship.

Many of these books offer more information than others. Those that delve into history, sociology, politics, law and other disciplines to explain the attraction provide more background info.

Here we are not talking about Black/White relationship only. There are all kinds of interracial relationships out there. Chinese/Koreans/Japanese/American/French/Hmong/British/German relationships exist. The list can go on. What do you think about interracial relationships these days?

People are attracted to each other. They want to know the other person. After all, a man is looking for a woman and a woman, a man from any racial and ethnic groups.

The premises are that Ms. Lootah wants to help muslim women get comfortable talking about and enjoying sex. Well, she is on a mission to change things for women in her country and elsewhere. She is not shy to talk or write about finding and experiencing orgasm. This book has been rocking the Muslim world these days. And she did all of that with specific quotes from the Koran! Now, do you think that most Muslim men would appreciate and encourage her work?

No. Not all of them want to hear about that. Some of them even go as far as threatening to kill her. Many of these guys may be hypocrite. In the book, the author warns against or confronts homosexuality because many men use other men for their sexual experience and expect to continue to receive the same acts from their spouse when they get married. No wonder Ms. Lootah has to counsel them when they are faced with divorce. According to Dubai's laws, couples contemplating divorce must first get some counseling to solve their marital issues. Ms. Lootah did not write the book for herself. "In Saudi Arabia and other countries where the genders are rigorously separated, many men have their first sexual experiences with other men, which affects their attitudes toward sex in marriage, Ms. Lootah said.

“Many men who had anal sex with men before marriage want the same thing with their wives, because they don’t know anything else,” Ms. Lootah said. “This is one reason we need sex education in our schools.”

She wrote for women who are not even sure whether they could kiss their partner all over their body. Now they have a book they can turn to. She gave the example of an older woman whose world was rocked when she discovered orgasm. She spent all of these years to procreate. She is now a grandmother who had never experienced sexual satisfaction with her husband. Ms. Lootah gave many other examples in the book.

Ms. Lootah is not some type of sexual activist. She is a marital counselor in Dubai's main courthouse. In her job, she has seen many couples battling intimacy issues. She realized that a lot of them are not educated in the matters of sex ed. Muslims should not limit their sexual pleasures. For that, she is a new evangelist in the Arab world. It is nothing new for many Muslim men who get this type of sexual favors from foreign women brought to the country because of the growing economy and oil revenues. In the age of the Internet, SMS, text message, twitter and other tech gadgets, it will be hard to keep these repressed Muslim women with a veil over their brain. Ms. Lootah wants to change the statut quo. She wants Muslim women to know about their G spot and make specific requests from their partners who may be surprised by such requests. It may be too much work for some of them.

"Top Secret: Sexual Guidance for Married Couples" should be on the table or private library of every single Muslim family. Well, they must not let the kids have access to it!

Honor killings are still prevalent in the region. Women can not have sex before being married. If they engage in such activities, they can be stoned to death or hung. Men can also die if they take the virginity of a woman whom they do not want to marry. No wonder that both sexes have to cut corners! On November 12, 2008, Fresno State's Baseball team went to Washington DC to meet President Bush on the South lawn of the White House. This is the same team that was nominated for Sports Illustrated's Sportsmen of the Year honor. Indeed, the bulldogs went from underdogs to being the wonderdogs or top dogs. Now there is a book about the experience and struggles.

Titled, "Underdogs to Wonderdogs," and written by Paul Loeffler, the 166-page book tells about the biggest story in Fresno State history. It is one of the most incredible underdog stories of all time. Indeed, Fresno State had dropped 12 of its first 20 games. It lost its best pitcher just before the postseason and needed to win the Western Athletic Conference tournament to get into the NCAA Tournament. Besides, the Bulldogs were the lowest-seeded team to win a national college title.

While rubbing shoulders with the president, the Bulldogs gave Mr. Bush, a baseball fan, some season's mementos such as an autographed baseball, a Bulldogs baseball cap and a jersey with the No. 1 and Bush's name on the back. This month, there is a series of good books that will be coming out. Among them, Mr. Greenspan's book, "The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World" is sure to be a bestseller as soon it comes out tomorrow morning. In it, Greenspan criticizes the Bush Administration for not responsibly handling the nation's spending and racking up big budget deficits. Mr. Greenspan who has served more than 5 presidents before retiring last year and was replaced by Bernanke did not mince his words. He is free to say and write whatever he wants to. "Greenspan takes his own party to task for forsaking conservative principles that favor small government. "My biggest frustration remained the president's unwillingness to wield his veto against out-of-control spending," Greenspan wrote.

So far, critics are saying that it is one of his best books. It will stand as his legacy. "The Age of Turbulence is Alan Greenspan's incomparable reckoning with the nature of this new world - how we got here, what we're living through, and what lies over the horizon, for good and for ill-channeled through his own experiences working in the command room of the global economy for longer and with greater effect than any other single living figure."

Another book you may have heard so many things about is "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. It is a book about her search for good foods in Italy, spiritual connection or renewal in India and love in Bali where she met her future husband, a Brasilian businessman who swore he would never marry again. But in order to live with Elizabeth in the US, he had to marry her. That was the catch.

Another book I am reading is "If I Did It: The Confessions of a Killer" written by O J Simpson, but acquired and published by the friends of Fred Goldman. Lo and behold, Simpson is back in the news this weekend. He is arrested by armed robbery in Las Vegas over some memorabilia at Palace Station.

New York City Gay and Jewish Cabbie on the Literary Map: Melissa Plaut, blogger and author Released Hack: How I Stopped Worrying About What to Do with My Life and Started Driving a Yellow Cab (Villard, $21.95)

Mss Melissa Plaut is one of the few female taxi drivers that you will meet in New York City. She has long realized that she has to take her destiny in her own hands. After graduating from the University of New Mexico, she found a job as a concierge with Miramax Films in Manhattan. She realized that working was hard labor there. She left the job and started traveling in Europe and Morocco. She returned to New York to get some other jobs. She was still trying to find out what she wanted to do. She quickly realized that she needed to do something to earn some money. She went to a Taxi-driving school. She became a taxi driver, a job that would help her with her fear of the unknown and satisfy her curiosity. She received her hack licence on her 29th birthday. She realizes that she has to keep moving to get some returns on her investment. She had to lease the cab, spend on gas and put in many hours without taking a break or dinner.

Melissa Plaut soon discovered that taxi driving is dominated by males, especially immigrants with Pakistani and Indian backgrounds. As she wrote about her new job, she could not get used to her new status. She felt "frustrated by my utter helplessness and powerlessness.. and irritated by the second-class citizen status that is assigned to you the second you sit behind the wheel of a yellow cab, no matter what race, sex, nationality or color you are."

She was ready to experience what non-white, no-American-born people experience on a daily basis. She was just experience the tip of the iceberg. Even though she was very tired, she wrote her observation and thoughts in Newyorkhack.blogspot.com. She also uploaded her pictures and filled in the details before forgetting them. She becomes our cab driver who writes or the writer who drives a cab. No matter what, she follows in the footsteps of 1935 musical comedy Broadway Gondolier from Dick Powell and 1976's Taxi Driver with Robert De Niro.

Melissa likes the experience of listening in on complete strangers who share her vehicle. The book describes why she began driving a taxi, what she has learned and passengers she remembers. She keenly remembers the passenger who introduced herself to her as a Dominatrix. She was complaining about her Wall Street clients. She is referring to the brokers, bankers, investors, hedge funds managers who consider themselves as self-important masters of the universe. They were lousy tippers. Melissa prefers passengers who are dominatrices, escorts, hookers and pimps. These people are in the service industry. They understand the importance of adding a few more dollars to the fares. Yet, moving to get the fares was a constant struggle for her. By the way, the dominatrix tipped her generously.

Melissa Plaut considers her moving taxi as a mobile theater. Her passengers have role to play. She writes about the young couple who were using telephone to talk to each other while riding in the taxi. Even other vehicles become characters in her moving play. She talks to other vehicles whose drivers want to cut in front of her. By the time she returns to the garage at the end of her shift, she knows how much she has made or whether she has recouped her investment.

Things Unspoken is a memoir gossip about the media mogul. When Oprah was made aware that the book is being peddled to agents, she was shocked and disappointed. What should Oprah do? Buy the book and never publish it? Or just fill him with money? Which one should be the answer. The book is set to reveal some painful moments in the superstar's life. Most of them were already made public by herself on the show. But the father feels there are some other episodes that would rivet the public.

He has such a great facility with languages. He is also well-traveled. He comes to give hope to parents of autistic children everywhere. On NPR, he answered questions that parents posed to him. Many people could identify with some of his examples.

Les Bienveillantes which has been acquired by HarperCollins was initially published in French by Gallimard under the pseudo of Jean Petit. So far, American Jonathan Littell has become somewhat of a celebrity in France and the French-speaking world with his first or maybe last book. Les Bienveillantes or The Kindly Ones has received two of France's highest honors, Prix Goncourt and Prix de l'a Academie Francaise. For some of us who appreciate books in other languages, we are having a good time reading a book by a Jewish American author on this side of the Atlantic.

What is this book about?

Les Bienveillantes is a memoir that is about a former SS officer who leads a hidden life in a French town. Most of the people who have read it so far have said that it is a troubling novel that causes all of kinds of conversation at work and public places. It shows the journey of SS Officer Maximillien Aue, Sturmbannführer whose mission was to improve the production of camps. Some of his superiors described him as a stubborn man who said that the inhumane does not exist. Yet, he contributed to the creation of hell on earth for thousands of Jews. That is the man Jonathan Littell was trying to bring out of his hole by talking about the wrong acts he committed in his life. Others saw him as somebody who was bragging about what he did under Hitler's regime. This book has admirators and detractors. The latter can not understand why a Jewish writer wants to be in the skin of Nazi to write this book. They wonder whether he can replicate this feast of literature. They also wonder whether his father, Robert Littell, a famous writer and author, wrote the book. They have more criticism of the 38-year-old author who refuses to give intereviews and has since has been seen in Spain playing with his child and family.

Well, Rupert Murdock was unhappy with her project of having If I Did It published. So, being the big man he is, he said all the bucks had to stop there. He canceled the book and the movie interview by Simpson. Less than a month after, Judith Reagan received the boot from the company. Rupert Murdock-owned publishing company put an end to her work this way, "Judith Regan's employment with HarperCollins has been terminated effective immediately," Jane Friedman, chief executive of the News Corp-owned imprint, said. "The Regan publishing programme and staff will continue as part of the HarperCollins General Books Group."

Since 1994, Judith has been running ReaganBooks imprint at HarperCollins. She has published the likes of Jose Canseco's tell-all book, Jenna Jamison's How to Make Love Like a Porn Star. William Styron, one of the great modern writers of the US, has died. However, his books will live on. More importantly, his writings will continue to give pleasure to many people. He was one of the fine writers and storytellers whose books were read and re-read by many. He knew how to write.

What will happen to Simpson's book barely starts to come out. Already, some copies are reportedly being circulated. In one word, some copies have already leaked out. There have been reports that "If I Did It" has been auctioned on ebay and elsewhere. In the meantime, Simpson said he did the book in order to pay bills. His money is dwindling. He needs to work. In the now canceled book, O.J. Simpson allegedly wrote about he hypothetically would have killed ex-wife Nicole Brown and friend Ronald Goldman. No wonder that these two families became enraged about the fact that Simpson was trying to cash in on blood money. Simpson said the money he received for the book is already spent. And he is not going to pay back despite the cancelation. He delivered on what he promised. Simpson is complaining that he is the only one who can't seem to make money on his bad luck. He is being pimped. We wonder whether the publisher will be able to make money on the book too. Will Rupert Murdock recoup some of his expenses? Will miss Regan make some money? People are saying that they still own the copies. Collectors are looking for them. If they want, they can still make some money. "Everyone has made money on me. I have been pimped for 12 years," Simpson said. "It's all blood money. Unfortunately, I had to join the jackals. It helped me get out of debt." Furthermore, Simpson said that he did it because he was trying to provide for his kids. Now Simpson appears to agree with the heat he is receiving. "I am taking heat and deserve it. But Murdock should not be taking the high road," he said.

No Turkey for O.J. Simpson: "If I Did It.." Got Canceled

News Corp canceled the much publicized release of O.J. Simpson's next book and TV
Rupert Murdoch put an end to the deal. Judith Regan, publisher of "If I Did It" had to obey the supreme boss. Still, she considered the book to be Simpson's mea culpa, confession. Now, one may wonder whether the whole thing was a ploy to get him to confess and boost the sagging bottomline of Fox Networks that has been trailing in viewership lately. The two-part sweeps month special also got canceled. Does this mean we will not see O.J. Simpson's face on TV any longer? Maybe not, what if a maverick publisher and broadcaster decide to offer him more money to publish a similar book? No matter what, the cancelation shows the power of consumers, shoppers and regular folks sitting at home. We are the viewers. We have power. If we do not like something, we should say it. The networks are realizing that we are embracing interactive networks. With the Youtubes of the world and blogging platforms, we, consumers now have a say. We are not taking it sitting down any longer. We can voice our disagreements and outrage. That is what Ron Goldman and relatives of Simpson's wife did. They lashed out at the planned publication and broadcast plans. Nicole Simpson and her friend Goldman get some level of justice. Money can not buy everything under this sun. There must be a point when people say enough is enough. Fred Goldman with his friends and attorneys got on the airwaves and started speaking out against the plans. Nobody can take away, erase the pain of a father who lost his beloved son in a nonsensical killing. "For that I will hate him always and find him despicable," Said Fred on ABC. O.J. Simpson was acquitted in 1995 of murder. However, the former football star and announcer was later found liable for the deaths in a wrongful death lawsuit brought on by the Goldman family.

It is clear that O.J. Simpson may not make any money on this double murder. Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson's spirits will not be captured in this late explanation of the murder that shocked the nation. Folks, this show is over for now.

For some writers, the winning of the Nobel Prize by Orhan Pamuk is the recognition of the rich Turkish literary tradition. For the nationalists, his winning is seen a disgrace because Pamuk dared to criticize and talk about the Armenian genocide and the mistreatment of the Kurds. Keep in mind that Turkey is a predominantly muslim country. Giving an interview on NPR, Pamuk refused to talk about some points of controversy. He did not want to mention his statements to a Swiss newspaper about Turkey's dark days. He alleged that Turkey lived tow painful episodes in its history: The massacre of Armenians during World War I and the guerrilla fighting in the Kurdish southeastern region . Pamuk is willing to tell the truth no matter what the price to his person. He accepted the Nobel Prize on behalf of Istanbul, his favorite city. He dedicated it to the city whose stories he has been telling in books such as "Snow," "My Name is Red," "Darkness and Light," "The White Castle," and "The Black Book."

Many observers and fans in the large Armenian community dispersed all over the world and specially in the United States and France agree with the choice. They think that Pamuk is a serious novelist who accepts what the Turkish forefathers have done to the Armenian people. What are his books about? Darkness and Light is a multigenerational story about a wealthy Turkish family in Istanbul. "My Name is Red" is a story of forbidden art and palace politics. In another development, France passed a bill that will punish anybody who contests that the killings of Armenians did not constitute a genocide with 1 year of prison and fines of up to $56,000. France recognized that up to 1.5 million Armenians died at the hands of Turks from 1915 to 1919 during World War I. During that time, Armenia was under the Ottoman empire. Turkey said these Armenians were killed during civil unrest and that it was not a calculated act on the part of the government. Now, contesting the cause of Armenian killings will become a crime for many French.

After the HP board fired her a few years ago, many people thought that was the last they would hear of the super business woman. In her new book, Carly points out whom she thinks was behind her firing at HP. Tom Perkins along with his other friend was the major instrument in her losing the jog. In a 60 Minutes interview, Carly was not mincing words. The interview with Carly came after Dunn's interview. Dunn is the most recent HP director to have faced trouble at the legendary company. She now said that Tom Perkins was also instrumental in her trouble by leaking board's decision and inner workings and going to the authorities. At the same time, Dunn revealed that she is going to start cancer treatment.

Carly is back. This book is the right platform she needed for her comeback. "The real reason the timing is fortuitous is that the book provides Fiorina a platform to reinvent herself for whatever comes next." She wants to re-engineer her career. "In her memoir emerging this week, "Tough Choices," Fiorina will contend that she was unfairly scrutinized as a woman in business and unproductively opposed by people who feared the big changes she had to make at HP....

"It's a book about what's required of change agents," she told a women-in-business conference recently at Babson College outside Boston. "The agents of change are always resisted. ... Some people fear the unknown, whatever it may be, even more than they fear the troublesome but known present."

Fiona had something to say about perception. "It is still true that women are caricatured and characterized differently from men," she said. "A woman lays people off, she's heartless," Fiorina said. "A man lays people off, he's decisive."

Besides his two previous books on the current administration, this new book is set to become a bestseller. Even before it is published, many politicians and people were making reservations on their copies. Woodward's account says high-level aides, first lady and others saw Rumsfeld as a liability. Woodward, appearing on 60 Minutes, Dateline, Today Show and other cable networks, did not hesitate to push his book. In his first two books, he was alledged to be writing well about the administration. In this book, he took a different turn. Woodward is saying that the president is getting isolated as his team has rejected advice to shift gears in Iraq before it is too late. The White House that requested advance copies of the book dismissed his reporting as "old news." The new book reports what White HOuse chief of Staff Andrew Card did. He suggested that Bush fire Rumsfeld and replace him with former Secretary of State, James Baker, after the November 2004 election and again around Thanksgiving 2005. No wonder Andrew Card did not last that long on the job. Rumsfeld stayed on the job. Andrew left. The book also gave details about how Rumsfeld appeared to have alienated key members and figures.

Why did I take so long to read Edward P. Jones's book, The Known World? In this book, Author Jones talked about black slave-owners in the Antebellum South. I think Oprah and her fans would find a lot to talk about should she invite Edward P Jones. Despite winning all the major literary awards there is to be won, why is it not made into a movie? Black on Black slavery in the South is not a topic that many historians wrote about. For many people, slavery was thought as the sole creation of the European or white folks. They do not understand that slavery flourished with the complicity of the African tribal chiefs, the needs for Europeans to grow more natural products such as sugar cane, cocoa for the Old world, greed, exploitation of a group with better education, equipment and weapon systems. Earlier reports such as those found on the Defamer and other websites show that the giant publishing company, Random House, was ready to refund buyers of the new infamous book by Frey who was subsequently grilled on the Oprah Winfrey show. That would be a first in the industry.

"Random House will offer a refund to readers who bought James Frey's drug and alcohol memoir "A Million Little Pieces" directly from the publisher, a move believed to be unprecedented, after the author was accused of exaggerating his story.

"Readers calling Random House's customer service line to complain on Wednesday were told that if the book was bought directly from the publisher it could be returned for a full refund. Those who bought the book at a bookstore were told to try and return it to the store where it was bought.

Publishers Weekly Senior Editor Charlotte Abbott called the Random House refunds unprecedented, and said neither she nor her colleagues "had ever heard of something like this before."

According to MSNBC, all these reports are unfounded. So the publisher is not intending to refund buyers of the book. Owners of the Frey's memoir of alcohol and drugs will have to live with their books

Yesterday we had 15 calls to our customer service line specific to “A Million Little Pieces” and fewer than that today.

Here is an interview between apologist Mark Shea and Zenit, a religious publication organization. Apologist Mark Shea and theology professor Ted Sri try to dissect "The Da Vinci Code" in their new book titled, "The Da Vinci Deception." They state that the book has some inaccuracies that purport to threaten the faith of many Christians. The authors' message is not to take the Da Vinci Code book and movie seriously.

"Q: What compelled the writing of this book?

Shea: The short answer is that tens of millions of people have read "The Da Vinci Code" and many have had their faith in Christ and the Catholic Church shaken. This blasphemous book has become a major cultural phenomenon, largely by attacking the very person and mission of Jesus Christ. It must be addressed.

Pseudo-knowledge is that stuff "everybody knows," such as the "fact" that Humphrey Bogart said "Play it again, Sam" -- except he didn't. Pseudo-knowledge doesn't matter much when the issue is the script of "Casablanca."

It matters greatly when it adversely affects the most sacred beliefs of a billion people, and when it levels the charge that the Catholic Church is essentially a vast "Murder Incorporated" network founded on maintaining the lie of Jesus' divinity and resurrection.

When that happens, very nasty genies get let out of bottles, as when the lies recorded by 19th-century czarist secret police forgers in the "Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion" became the basis for what "everybody knew" about the Jews in the terrible anti-Semitic persecutions of the 20th century.

"The Da Vinci Code" has sold close to 30 million copies. In May, it will appear as a major film and will acquire even more unquestioned authority among millions of historically and theologically illiterate viewers -- unless Christians state the facts and help viewers recognize just how badly they've been had.

"Oprah & Friends" will debut in September 2006 and will feature a broad range of original programming from Harpo Radio, Inc., including regular segments hosted by popular personalities from "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and O, The Oprah Magazine and an exclusive original weekly reality radio show with Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King. He is appearing on shows and news media to tell his readers that the truth unveiled in his book is what it is. Critics are asking whether he embellished his story or whether they are reading a work of fiction instead of fact. No matter what, by selecting the book as her book club book of the month, Oprah has made it possible for him to sell millions of this book.

Now will there be a backlash from the readers who may think they are duped by the author? He may become a-one-book author. Now we have to see what Oprah's reactions are going to be. Now that Oprah has appeared on the David Letterman show, the ball is in his hand. It remains to be seen whether he will show up. For a few months, he has been making fun about what will happen to him if he goes. He jokes that Oprah will make her cry like a baby.

Talking about Oprah, she announced that she will go to Africa for the holidays. She wants to reconnect with the people she has been helping on the African continent. Before she goes away on vacation, she has work to do for the Color Purple, the musical. She does not waste any opportunity to talk about the musical. If it does not succeed, it's not her fault. Talking about the show, Julia Roberts sent her the biggest bouquet of flowers for the opening of the musical. Julia who is the mother of twins has her own gig too. She was recently found to be the highest paid actress commanding easily $20 million. Not bad for a new mom! The two women are good friends. It's all about love.

It was quite a coincidence that the night she appeared on the show, Oprah Presents The Color Purple, a musical, was scheduled to open on Broadway. Well, as you might guess, it was a win-win situation for everybody involved. Oprah had asked the producer of the musical how she could help him. A Million Little Pieces, Oprah's Book Club Selection

Ah! The difference of Oprah's seal on the book. It's the difference of before her selection and after it was picked and marketed to millions of fans and readers. James Frey, author of "A Million Little Pieces" must be a happy guy. So must his mother and wife be! This book is an autobiography. It's about his addiction to alcohol and crack that almost killed him. He wrote the book from the inside out. He said that he had never seen a book or a movie that got the problems of addiction to alcohol and crack right. "I hadn't ever read a book or seen movies or television that got addiction right. A lot of times people try to blame other people for their problems or try to romanticize addiction. I don't believe most addicts are victims of anything but themselves."

The magic of Oprah works this way. If you have a bestseller, she can make it into a supper bestseller! I hope she can make my husband's books into a bestseller too.

Do abortions contribute to the lowering of the crime rate in this country? This question was being debated in Slate Magazine six yers ago by Dr. Steven D. Levitt, author of "Freakonomics" that became a bestseller. But now we may have an answer from a well-known source. Let's say it's a troubling one. It makes us ask the questions of whether these talk show formats are conducive to the discussion of such hardcore issues as race, abortions etc.

Author of many books including the 1993 best seller "The Book of Virtues," former education secretary in the Reagan administration, former director of drug policy during George H.W. Bush's administration, and current talk show host, William Bennett, is a well-known public figure. He talked about the potential of reducing crime by aborting all black children.

"I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down," radio talk show host Bennett said in his broadcast.
"That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do but your crime rate wuld go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky."

William Bennett tried to defend his position. "I was pointing out that abortion should not be opposed for economic reasons, any more than racism or, for that matter, slavery or segregation should be supported or opposed for economic reasons." He went on to say that "immoral policies are wrong because they are wrong, not because of an economic calculation. One could just as easily have said you could abort all children and prevent all crime to show the absurdity of the proposition."

When somebody like Bennett says things like that even in an attempt to make a point, people tend to get surprised by some type of revelations. Does this go back to the old plan repatriating all Black people to Africa. Already, as a country, we are dealing with issues of mistrust and people who think others have hidden agenda. When the common, ordinary, uncultured man hears such statements, he'll start being panicked and worried that his offsprings may be exterminated in some type of modern-day apartheid. Even South Africa did not get to that point. Little by little, these types of public statements erode the foundation of respect for the person of color or Black man and woman. In a case of emergency as revealed by Katrina, the slow, sleeping indifference may manifest itself into inactions by those who are called to provide services to everybody regardless of skin color, staggering statistics of crime, birth rate, past history.

Now, maybe the format was not appropriate to get into these kinds of issues. Will Bennett lose his talk show? We doubt it. We are sure people will pay closer attention now. The worst thing about it is that he may end up getting more listeners as a result of this brouhaha.

The Book That Almost Broke The Book Club: It Stopped The Dinner Party

The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen.

The story is essentially a year in the life of the Lambert family: Enid, Alfred, and their grown children Gary, Chip, and Denise. The live in the Midwest, in the city of St. Jude -- that’s right, the patron saint of lost causes. The family seems normal, almost bland. Alfred was an engineer, Chip was a professor, Denise was a chef. Did you notice I said “was”? Each one has slipped the bonds of their career, some not by choice.
"Jonathan Franzen will not be on the Oprah Winfrey show because he is seemingly uncomfortable and conflicted about being chosen as a book club selection," Ms. Winfrey said in a recent statement.

"I'm a Midwesterner, and I'm eager to please," Franzen, 42, told the Chicago Tribune in a telephone interview from his New York apartment. "To find myself identified with an arrogant New York literary contingent makes me feel very misunderstood," he said.
Ms. Winfrey's choice of The Corrections for her club was announced Sept. 24 and Franzen had been expected to appear on her show in the next few weeks.
Franzen said he had considered turning down the pick, which virtually guarantees hundreds of thousands of sales. He said he was concerned about having the Oprah logo on the cover
Here’s what a reviewer wrote about The Corrections when it was selected by Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club. It seems that Jonathan has lost his chance. One may wonder why Oprah does not let her book club idea die out. Maybe she wants to show her critics that she still has the power to sell books. She can rely on her community to buy the books she recommends.

“(But note: chances have improved considerably with the 24 September 2001 selection of this title for Oprah’s book club, apparently a huge sales-booster which means the book will likely reach at least some of the audience it should. Good for Oprah ! Good for America !)
(Please note: chances have now evaporated, after Jonathan Franzen made a number of clearly ill-advised remarks about Oprah ! and her book club, leaving the public with the impression that he is an arrogant, smug "literary" type who looks down upon the (common) reader. Thin-skinned Oprah promptly uninvited and de-selected him and his book on 22 October 2001, announcing that "Jonathan Franzen will not be on The Oprah Winfrey Show because he is seemingly uncomfortable and conflicted about being chosen as an Oprah's Book Club selection" -- rather than having him on and taking him to task for (or at least exploring) his remarks and discussing the roots of the conflicts she perceives.
It is a ridiculous situation, and it has been handled badly by all involved -- with Franzen and all semi-serious literature getting the brunt of the often unfair criticism. Curiously, practically no one thinks Oprah has done anything wrong, though of course she has: the only thing that counts is the book, and the quality and the significance of book has nothing to do with its author, no matter how rude and obnoxious and arrogant he might be. Oprah can, of course, do anything she wants on her show, but she seemed to sincerely believe that The Corrections was worthy of the attention of her audience -- and she was right. Her act now seems to imply that she doesn't care about writing and reading at all, that she is only interested, like so many others, in the cult of the author. It is the personality behind the book, not the words between the covers that she apparently wanted to share with her audience (as is perhaps appropriate for a TV personality). Too bad: great literature is often written by really obnoxious, unpleasant people (who are often not particularly media-savvy). The photogenic and docile Franzen was an unlikely candidate to provoke Oprah's ire -- someone who looks the part for the publicity tour and is plugging what is actually a decent book -- but he did, with a venegeance.
Franzen may be embarrassed, but he is certainly making enough with the book (benefiting from even this relatively bad publicity). And Oprah is -- as we see by the reactions to this affair -- essentially untouchable. The real losers ? The reading public -- especially the broader public which usually wouldn't come across such a title (but which is the audience that should be reading the book), generously made aware of it by Oprah. But now Oprah has set them against it -- and tarred all serious fiction (and all books written by snobby authors) with one broad brush. Too bad for America !)”

What does it mean to be selected by Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club in terms of sales?

“Oprah's Book Club is -- make that: was -- one of the rare instances of any significant time on any popular television programme in the United States being devoted to literature in any form. Oprah's selection is also the single most anticipated event in American publishing. Being selected for Oprah's Book Club is an instant and absolute guarantee of an increase in sales in the hundreds of thousands. Any book that previously had not sold exceptionally well is instantly lifted to bestsellerdom. (In the United States, for works of fiction, no prize can claim to be anywhere near as influential in boosting sales -- sales of The Corrections barely budged after it won the supposedly prestigious National Book Award, for example. As prime movers of works of fiction the French have the Goncourt, the Brits have the Booker, the Americans have Oprah. Draw your own conclusion.)
Franzen was well aware of what it meant for his book to be chosen by Oprah.”
